While reading my publication of choice, The New York Times, I came across an interesting article on how college graduates with entry level jobs in New York are being forced to live in the equivalent of college dorms. These urban dorms house PhD, Master graduates, MBAs etc yet those that live in this dorm are entry level workers who are not getting enough money to live on their own. The article mentions how rent in some parts of New York are up to 650 dollars a month (that would be slightly cheaper then parts of Irvine) but the average starting wage for college graduates (those who already have a large amount of debt due to college loans) is 25,000 per year and when you figure out all the other expenses in life, your not left with much.
In another article, the Senate voted to replace FEMA. That's not a typo, that the Republican lead Senate abolishing FEMA and deciding to replace it with another similar type organization. Essentially tearing down one large government agency just to make another one (Can you say Homeland Security?) Don Young (R-Alaska) wants to keep the FEMA but move it outside of DHS while Susan Collins and Joe Lieberman (I'll bite my tongue) cosponsored the bill to change the agency so at least there is some bi-partisan support. But the big question remains, can we build an airplane while in flight? Can FEMA (or what ever takes it place) remain effective when we need them?
